The foothills of the Outeniqua mountains in the heart of The Garden Route, make a perfect setting for the George Golf Club. With 18 championship holes on a top-quality course, it is not surprising that so many good things have been said about the George Golf Club. The region enjoys abundant rain and good soils and boasts many beautiful, established trees and shrubs which flourish on the course. Today, the area off the fairways is heavily wooded and the 6105 meter layout remains lush and green throughout the year.
The Kikuyu fairways are wide and the bunkers well placed. Trees and shrubbery on the rough pose a challenge in club selection. The dam is also a point of negotiation especially off the first tee. There are some short par-fours at George, and the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th are all less than 320 meters long. But these relatively easy holes only serve to tease the golfer into a false sense of security. To counter them, there are some far more demanding two-shotters, with the 7th, the 9th and the 18th all searching tests of power, skill and shot making ability.
The back nine is something of an architectural oddity and has three par-fives, three par-fours and three par-threes. The long 11th is an outstanding hole, with two large trees in front of the green. The problem is that there is also an out-of-bounds fence on the left. It's a tight shot, making for an engaging challenge.
The 183-meter 17th is one of george's best holes and it requires a long-iron into an exaggerated oval-shaped green that is quite shallow from front to back. This hole features in the top 500 in the world as one of the best par-threes. The 18th is one of the region's best known finishing holes, with a fairway that slopes down from right to left with this increasing the likelihood of a hooked tee shot finishing in the woods. It is also an extraordinarily beautiful hole, where the clubhouse and mountains are framed in an imposing picture as the golfer wals towards the green.
The George Golf Club course is not just another course! It is rated in the top ten in South Africa and offers true value to the golfer.
