Situated on the Kwa Zulu-Natal South Coast, the Southbroom Golf Club is a seafront course with a beautiful setting. It is considered one of South Africa's finest and most popular holiday resort courses. With the waves of the Indian Ocean crashing on the rocks and the beach to the east, the atmosphere is electric.
The skill of even the most accomplished golfer is tested on each of the 18 holes. The course is both picturesque and interesting, with a par-71 layout. The par-3 fourth hole measuring just 114 meters (extremely short by normal standards), is a gem. This is however, not an easy hole when the wind gets up.
The next hole, a 235-meter par-four, is also unusually short. But this time the danger is out-of-bounds on the immediate left. There are only 3 par-fives on this course, two of them being the finishing holes, 17 and 18, which can offer genuine birdie opportunities.
The size of the green on the par-five 9th has recently doubled. A word of warning - this green sweeps towards the edge of a large water hazard, hidden from view! It is undulating and is well wooded with indigenous trees and bush and is generally sheltered from the coastal winds. Its bunkers, water features and areas of rough provide plenty of interest and challenge. The 112-meter 13th hole is the most talked about on the course as it runs so close to the sea.
Dams and a river flowing to the sea are features and golfers should be most careful when negotiating this charming course.
This course has conistently been improved and upgraded since its establishment in 1938. It always has a neat, manicured look about it. Country Club grass is found on the greens and local Kweek and Buffalo on the fairways. This is a well-wooded course with 11 water hazards and 32 bunkers.
The clubhouse has great views of the course and the Indian Ocean, affording opportunities for frequent whale and dolphin spotting. It is an ideal spot to relax after an excting game.
The surrounding forests abound with bushbuck, vervet monkeys and spectacular birds, including woolly-necked storks. One well-known commentator has described it as “one of the finest holiday courses to be found anywhere”.
